Beckham in Los Angeles

So David Beckham has finally started playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy, and aside from his high profile, it is hard to see what he has brought to the game. When he boarded the flight from Madrid to the USA, commentators were talking about how his skills were so far ahead of his new team mates that he would be taking on the rest of the league single handed.

However, what has happened is that Beckham has arrived at a team that is underperforming, and been injured. He hasn’t really been allowed to get into the game yet, and has not shone as he had hoped that he would.

There are occasional glimpses of his quality, but he really isn’t that far ahead of the rest of the players on the pitch. He is just one of the guys, and that will probably be what causes the team to fall apart completely.

Beckham is being paid something like $500,000 per week to see out his career in the USA, his team mates are probably on about $10K, if that. They will be taking a look at him and getting jealous. If he had arrived and turned things around, the other players probably would have welcomed him, but he hasn’t, and unless things improve next season with his fitness levels, he’ll probably not last very long in the side.

Of course, Posh has settled very well into Los Angeles life. They have shops, she likes shopping. They have sunshine, she likes sunbathing, they have paparazzi, and she craves attention, and they have skinny lattes, and she has less body fat than a skeleton.

Just how long they will want to stay when the press turns on them, and the fans begin to understand just how much of money is being spent on Beckham and his wife remains to be seen, but what Beckham needs to realise is that he needs to raise his game, and start playing at something like the level he is capable of, and soon.
