Beckham in Los Angeles
He is the most famous footballer in the world, is at the absolute peak of his career, and he is just about to start a new career in the MLS with the LA Galaxy. David Beckham, whose final season in Europe was looking as though it was going to be a bad one, managed to turn things around to such an extent that he resurrected his International career, and practically won the Spanish soccer championship single handed.
He is an iconic sportsman who has become a style leader as much as he is a footballer, a man who has attracted countless column inches, is one of the most photographed people on the planet, has a pop star wife who is just as famous as him, and who’s best friend in Los Angeles is Tom Cruise.
In Europe, there was practically no-one who was more A-List than Beckham, and the chances are, when he starts to hit the city in Los Angeles, he will be just as much of a celebrity in the land of the stars and stripes as he was at home.
Many people dismissed his move to the states as the first step towards retirement, but Beckham himself is more positive about the challenges facing him. He has been brought to the league to raise its profile, he will without a doubt become the star of the show, and many more players are likely to follow him.
Indeed former team mate at Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane is rumoured to be considering a number of offers to come out of retirement for two more seasons in the USA to act as the culmination of his career, although this would be just like the 1970s when the top players of the day like Pele and Beckenbauer took the cash to play a couple of seasons of highly lucrative exhibition soccer for the New York Cosmos.
Beckham is different, he has shown this year that he is one of the most competitive players around, and still has plenty to give to any team. His return to international football has been the catalyst for a turnaround for the struggling England team, and for sure, the minute he starts playing in the USA he will force the standard to improve for everyone in the league.
